Have a New Year's resolution to make your home safer and more comfortable for you and your family? With the chaos (albeit fun-filled chaos) of the holidays in the rearview mirror, now is the perfect time to step back, take a breath, and consider your options.

Over the past few years, smart home systems have soared in popularity, especially as they've become more technologically advanced, increasingly user-friendly, and significantly more affordable. If you've considered a smart home system but haven't taken the plunge, it might be because you've got a few outstanding questions or concerns.

Below, we'll dive into some smart home basics, explain everything you need to know about Hedge, and address common questions and concerns. Along the way, we'll link out to relevant resources to help you get better acquainted with certain topics.

Ready? Let's dive in!

What is a "smart home"?

Glad you asked! A smart home involves a series of home protection devices, like security cameras and leak detectors, connected via digital network and accessible via smartphone from anywhere in the world!

Let's break this down. Hedge, for example, includes a number of smart home devices that, when activated, monitor the home for things like unexpected motion or water accumulation. If the devices detect an issue, they send an alert notification via Hedge's smartphone app. From there, you can either "dismiss" the notification if you don't perceive a real issue or take action to address it.

Why should I get a smart home system?

Can smart home systems truly impact your home's safety and security? Are they really worth the investment (no matter how minor)? Call us biased, but our answer is a resounding yes.

You might be familiar with some of the more obvious benefits of home protection systems, like their ability to prevent theft by alerting you to unexpected movement and noise. But some systems' capabilities and homeowner benefits extend far beyond that. For example:

  • Comprehensive home systems (Hedge included!) also protect your possessions from fire and water damage.
  • Smart home systems can save you money in more ways than one. They can help you prevent costly home issues and they may make you eligible for a discount on your homeowners insurance.
  • These systems don't just make your home more secure . . . they also make your life more convenient. Let's say you're typically out of the house when your kids arrive home from school. A smart home system can alert you to motion and noise indicating they've made it home safely — without you having to call to check in! (Same thing goes for pets . . . smart home devices like security cameras make it easy to keep an eye on your furry friends when you're not home!)
  • In addition to functional benefits, smart home systems also provide emotional benefits — like peace of mind and the sense of pride that comes with taking preventive action to protect the things that matter most.

What products does Hedge offer?

Hedge currently offers two packages — the Prevent Package and Protect Package — that include the below devices:

Prevent Package:

  • SmartCam
  • Smart Leak Sensor Kit (includes three Leak Sensors)

Protect Package:

  • SmartCam
  • Smart Leak Sensor Kit (includes three Leak Sensors)
  • Smart Motion Kit (includes one Motion Sensor and two Contact Sensors)

These packages can be purchased alone or customized with "add-on" devices. So, for example, if you'd like to keep an eye on more areas of the home, you can purchase additional SmartCams. And if you're interested in monitoring for water accumulation in your bathrooms, kitchen, basement, and laundry room (the four areas of the home most susceptible to water damage), you can purchase an additional Smart Leak Sensor Kit (or two).

As we chat with customers and evaluate feedback, we'll continue to incorporate additional devices into the Hedge repertoire. (Coming later this year: an all-new video doorbell!)

What makes Hedge different (or better) than other systems?

Home security and more . . .

We say that Hedge isn't your average security system, because it covers everything a traditional security system does . . . plus so much more! While traditional security systems focus on issues like break-ins and theft, Hedge also addresses the less nefarious, but still potentially devastating, issues of fire and water damage.

Fire prevention

What happens when your fire alarm (or carbon monoxide detector) goes off when you and your family aren't home to hear it and respond? Worse still — what if you have a pet at home? It's a serious issue, especially if you live far from neighbors who might smell smoke and intervene.

Enter: Hedge's SmartCam. A security camera ? you might be thinking. What does that have to do with fire and carbon monoxide detection? Well, Hedge's SmartCams feature motion and noise detection. So if they "hear" the specific frequency emitted by standard fire and carbon monoxide detectors, they'll send you an immediate alert to your smartphone so you can quickly take action.*

Water detection

Now, let's move on to one of our favorite topics: water. Specifically, the water running through almost every room in your home. While water is one of the most common types of insurance claims, not all smart home systems come equipped to prevent water damage. Because we understand your biggest home risks (more on our unique expertise later), we know that water damage can be just as — if not more — devastating than theft and fire.

So, we made sure to address it. Both of our packages come equipped with a Smart Leak Sensor Kit, containing three Leak Sensors that alert you to the smallest amount of water accumulation (.5mm to be exact). Place the sensors wherever water may leak, overflow, or just generally misbehave (under sinks, toilets, and appliances like dishwashers and washing machines is a good start). Other features that set Hedge apart

All smart home systems are designed to provide a sense of calm and reassurance. But Hedge takes peace of mind a step further with included (that's no additional fee) 24/7 issue escalation via text, call, and emergency contact. This means that in certain, high-priority scenarios — your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors sounding in range of the SmartCam or water accumulation reaching .5mm — Hedge goes the extra mile to make sure you're aware of the issue. A series of notifications, texts, and calls are made to you and other users on your account (e.g. your spouse), followed by your emergency contact. (For a full breakdown, including example text messages and voicemails, click here).

What else makes Hedge different? Hedge is easy to install (see for yourself!), affordable, and customizable, because every home and situation is unique. These are just some of the features typical of a DIY home security system.

Now, back to affordability . . .

How much does Hedge cost?

You can purchase Hedge's Prevent Package for as little as $74.99, and Hedge's Protect Package for just $109.99. Oh, and did we mention — there are no monthly fees or long-term contracts for either package. That means potential years of home protection and security for a one-time, affordable payment (less than an average family spends on a week's worth of groceries!).

Of course, you have the option to add devices to our core packages, and you'll find prices for those here. And just like the packages, these add-on device purchases are a one-time fee.

Who is the team behind Hedge and why should I trust them?

Another thing that sets Hedge apart? It was created by the home experts at American Family Insurance. Their vast knowledge and experience when it comes to identifying home risks made them uniquely equipped to launch Hedge.

American Family has been in the insurance business for close to one hundred years, and is committed not only to assisting homeowners after issues occur, but also to helping them prevent problems in the first place.

What happens if I need help during setup or with troubleshooting?
